In the Western Cape, 75% of the population will need blood or blood products in their lifetime. However, only 1.5% of the population donates blood. Considering this, the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service are calling on eligible and willing life savers to become blood donors.
Becoming a blood donor is easy and it will only take 30 minutes of your time every two months to save up to three people’s lives with one donation. If you are older than 16 years and younger than 65, weigh more than 50kg, you are healthy on the day of donation and lead a safe sexual lifestyle you tick all the basic donor criteria boxes.
WPBTS has taken it a step further to make giving blood easy. The WP Blood app was launched in 2017 and currently boasts over 8 000 users. The app enables a user to see the blood levels per blood type in real time. Donors are able to see the clinic closest to them and can navigate there using the app. Donors can create their own profiles and have access to information such as their donor code, what blood type they are, number of units donated, when they last donated and when they are due to donate again. WP Blood is available for free download on iOS and Android app stores.
