The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service has provided the Western Cape with sufficient safe blood for more than 75 years. Donors and recipients are our priority whilst we manage the entire process of blood collection, component processing, testing, storage and distribution. We use the latest technologies and research to ensure blood product safety, and to excel in the science of transfusion. Each year we collect more than 165 000 units of blood that are used to save or improve the lives of more than 495 000 people. Our quality management system ensures that we maintain consistently high standards of service. We operate according to strict standards based on those of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and South African National Accreditation System (SANAS).

Professional Nurse

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to collect, process and distribute blood and blood products of the highest standards in the Western Cape.


A vacancy exists for a Professional Nurse – All Regions (Paterson Grade C2)


Purpose of the Job

  • The overall health & safety of the donor
  • Medically screened donors, accepts or defers resulting in the collection of safe blood
  • Ensuring professionalism and safe, hygienic conditions for performing successful blood collection
  • All medical related decisions and overall functioning of the clinic


Minimum Requirements

  • Matriculation Certificate
  • Diploma in Nursing Science
  • Registered with the SA Nursing Council
  • Venepuncture/Phlebotomy experience is essential – preferably gained in an ICU or Trauma unit
  • Previous Blood Transfusion experience would be an added advantage
  • Computer Literate
  • A code 8 driver’s licence without endorsements
  • Fully bilingual – English and Afrikaans
  • The working hours are variable i.e. shift basis

  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Have a friendly disposition and willingness to “go the extra mile”
  • Accuracy in data collection
  • Must be able to work as part of a team
  • Skilled in customer services and the ability to deal with the public
  • Assist with promotional/administrative activities as needed
